Privacy Policy
How Volary handles subscriber and visitor data.
Volary respects your privacy. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we look after it, and the choices you have. It is written to align with the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
Volary is an independent wine publication operated as a sole trader in Queensland, Australia. If you have any questions about this policy or your information, contact us at privacy@volary.com.au.
This policy was last updated on 26 July 2026.
What we collect
We only collect information we actually need to run the publication.
Newsletter and subscriptions. When you subscribe, we collect your email address and, if you enter one, your name. The signup form asks for both. The name is optional and is used only to address the newsletter to you. We also keep basic records of which editions were sent to you and whether they were opened or clicked, so we can see whether the publication is reaching people.
Website analytics. When you visit the site, our analytics record limited technical information such as the pages you view, the approximate region you are visiting from, the type of device and browser you use, and the site that referred you. Our analytics are cookieless and do not identify you personally. We use this information in aggregate to understand what readers find useful.
Contact. When you email us or use the contact form on the site, we collect your email address, your name if you provide it, and whatever you choose to put in your message.
We do not ask for sensitive information, and we ask that you do not send it.
Why we use it
We use your information to send the publication and any updates you have asked for, to respond to your messages, to understand and improve what we publish, and to keep the site secure and working. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for unrelated advertising.
Who we share it with
We do not sell or rent your information. We use a small number of trusted service providers to run the publication, and they only handle your information to provide their service to us:
- Ghost is our publishing platform. It hosts the website, stores subscriber records in our database, runs the contact form, and provides our website analytics.
- Mailgun delivers our newsletter emails.
Some of these providers are based overseas, including in the United States, which means your information may be stored or processed outside Australia. We take reasonable steps to use providers that handle data responsibly.
We may also disclose information if we are required to by law.
Cookies
Volary uses only the cookies needed to run the site and keep you logged in if you are a subscriber. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies, and our analytics do not set cookies.
How we keep it safe
We take reasonable steps to protect your information from misuse, loss, and unauthorised access, including using reputable providers, keeping software up to date, and limiting who can access subscriber data. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we treat your information carefully.
How long we keep it
We keep your subscription details for as long as you are subscribed. If you unsubscribe, we remove or de-identify your details within a reasonable period, except where we need to keep something to meet a legal obligation. We keep contact messages only as long as needed to deal with your enquiry.
Your choices and rights
You can unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time using the link at the bottom of every email. You can also ask us to:
- tell you what personal information we hold about you,
- correct anything that is wrong, or
- delete your information.
To make any of these requests, email privacy@volary.com.au. We will respond within a reasonable time and will not charge you for a straightforward request.
Children
Volary is intended for adults of legal drinking age and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.
Complaints
If you think we have mishandled your information, please contact us first at privacy@volary.com.au so we can try to put it right. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The current version always lives on this page, with the "last updated" date at the top.
