Sam Catlow

Sam Catlow is the founder and editor of Volary. A fascination with history and geology led him to wine, which takes what is hidden in the soil and the culture built around it and puts both in the glass.

While living in Europe and later Canberra, with premium wine regions close by, he completed his WSET Level 2 and spent his weekends running public tastings at the Gundog Estate cellar door. He also took a Champagne masterclass with Bernadette O'Shea.

A trip to Stanthorpe after moving home to Brisbane opened his eyes to what was on his own doorstep. The Granite Belt ranks among Australia's highest wine regions, and what he tasted convinced him Queensland's wines deserved closer attention. Volary is the result.

His approach is simple. Strip away the pretension and jargon and it all comes down to one basic question: do you like this wine?
