Volary is a Queensland wine publication for curious drinkers. It covers the wines, producers and places across the state that don't make the national radar.

Most people are surprised Queensland makes wine at all. The producers worth knowing about take real effort to find, because they are rarely on a shelf or a distributor's list. Closing that gap is the job.

There is no reading order you have to follow. But if you have just landed here and want one, this is it.

1. Read Wine Basics if the ritual puts you off

Wine Basics is the written version of the beginners session I run. How to actually taste a wine, how pairing works, how to read a list, and what is going on when a sommelier presents a bottle.

It assumes you know nothing and it is built to come back to. There are three quick reference cards on the page you can download and keep on your phone.

Skip it if you already taste comfortably. Nothing else on the site depends on it.

2. Then pick one explainer

These take a single idea and pull it apart. One is enough to see how the publication reads.

The Champagne Capital is about why one bottle carries the status it does, and where to find serious Champagne without leaving Queensland.

The Magnum Buys You Time is about what a big bottle actually does to the wine inside it. Worth reading before you buy one.

Wine Casino is a blind-tasting game for your own table. Read it if you want to run a tasting at home that nobody has to sit through.

3. Learn what a rating means before you read a tasting note

The Rating System is a two-minute read and it is the contract between us. Four tiers, no point scores, and the same standard every time. Wines that don't reach the floor are not written about at all.

Worth reading once, because after that every tasting note tells you something specific rather than something vague.

4. Then the wine itself

Tasting notes are individual wines assessed on the same terms every time: nose, palate, verdict, and a rating. Every note says how I got the bottle and whether I paid for it.

How this works
