Rokkwell · Lagrein 2023

Riverland Lagrein. Solid. Deep, layered, inviting.

Riverland · Lagrein · 2023 · 13.8% · Edition 2

Nose: Violet, plums, vanilla, black cherry, dried herbs.

Palate: Luscious, full-bodied and deep wine, with layers of red and dark berries that lead into earthy herbaceous notes. Well balanced mix of acidity with soft tannins.

Verdict

This was my first Lagrein so I have nothing to compare it against. The colour is the first thing you notice, such a deep purple my mind went straight to smoke on the water. Lagrein comes from northern Italy and it is one of the darkest reds they grow, so the glass was typical to the variety. To me it drinks like a mix of Montepulciano, Grenache and Malbec. The fruit is from the Riverland, so a touch of South Australia from this Granite Belt producer. It's a really inviting wine with layers of flavour that make it enjoyable on its own. At $36 I will be buying it again and sharing with my friends.
